Why 1 Thessalonians?
It’s a letter written by Paul (and a couple of his ministry partners) who originally brought the Gospel of Jesus to the City of Thessalonica (See Acts 17).
Paul and his ministry friends didn’t actually intend on going to Thessalonica. Their plans were to go to Asia, but the Holy Spirit wouldn’t let them.
THEIR PLANS GOT THWARTED
Then Paul had a dream where someone from Macedonia begged “Come and Help me”
So Paul and these other two people went
Thessalonica is a city in that same region
Paul came and they preached the Gospel to these people. Paul stayed there for close to 3 weeks.
They planned to stay in Thessalonica much longer, but within 3 weeks they were able to start a little church
All of their plans suddenly got cut short because of some riots that broke out in Thessalonica. The riots were in direct response to the Gospel spreading. Paul and his ministry partners lives were threatened.
The people of that fledgling church received incredible threats. Then Jason (a new believer) was publicly beaten for trusting Jesus.
For the love of that church, and to prevent more violence, Paul and the others had to flee that city quickly.
The whole scenario was UNEXPECTED and UNPRECEDENTED
GOD’S CALLING ON US DOESN’T MAKE THINGS EASY
So you have this 3 week old small church, filled with new believers, no mentors and lots of unrest in their city.
All of that created a destabilizing environment
In the middle of that, Paul writes a letter to this church
Over the month of July (and part of August) our staff and others will post DAILY 5 minute videos on Facebook to encourage us (as a church) as we walk with God through the book of 1 Thessalonians
